Welcome to our site, azbicop! We have a great group here! Over the years we have had members from Arizona but as with a lot of our membership, they come and go. They check in every once in a while and then we don't see them for a while. But they're out there.
As far as coming out, I'd say learn the job first. Only you can determine the time when it would be best to come out. If you were already open when you took the job, obviously you'd know whether or not if was wise. But things are (and have been for a while) getting better and better for gays on the job. Yes, there are still pockets of ignorance and will be for some time. But once you let them know who you are, they can't really intimidate you. My own (and the experience of so many others I know) experience says learn the job, prove yourself as a good, knowledgeable and reliable cop and your coming out won't be that much of a big deal. Don't let anyone push you into it if you yourself are not ready to do it. If and when the time comes, you'll know it and make your decision.
In the meantime, be part of our group here! Contribute and take part. Take the initiative and begin topics and comment on others. We're in our summer doldrums right now but we get busier and busier throughout the year! And when things are quiet on the GLBT LEO front, we laugh, joke and rib each other unmercifully! An essential part of being a cop, as you will find out if you haven't already!
Welcome AZBICOP! Your question is probably the most analyzed question you will ever put yourself through in your career. Like bluepride said (in similar words), be a good cop first, learn your job, develop your intuitive instincts. When you start to realize you have the respect of your peers/co-workers for your abilities, then worry about being out. Some found it easier to make an announcement, others found it easier to just naturally evolve from just a few confidants knowing to gradually allowing a few more, then a few more, to learn about you. Personally I found it easier to let it come out on its own and then treat it like it is no big deal, nothing more interesting that asking if today is Monday. That worked for me. FOR ME. You have to find your own best method, but it is always good to hear pros and cons from multiple sides and OPINIONS. Best of luck, take the time to focus on doing a great job, that will keep you safe and then sweat the small stuff!
